LWPI Graduates at the University of Akron

Posted By Abby Langston, Thursday, July 7, 2011
On May 25, 2011, the LWPI Spring Session at the University of Akron came to a close.
Ten very talented students completed this eight-week course, gaining an immense amount
of knowledge regarding the wedding- and event-planning Industry. In addition to the
required textbook work, students took a field trip to a local country club, attended a bridal show, had speakers from the music, rental and floral industries, and planned a
wedding for one of their classmates.

Thank You...

I would like to say a special Thank You to Laurie Beckmann and LWPI. Laurie was not only a great teacher but a mentor as well. She opened our eyes to the endless possibilities that are in store for wedding and event planners. I have always dreamt of becoming an event planner and have even completed quite a few projects within the past couple of years. Because of the love of the industry I often attend bridal expos, watch endless shows in hopes of one day making my dream come true. Thanks to a good friend at work I enrolled in this course which was quite a distance from home, but oh so worth it. I have met great women in class who are as passionate about the industry as myself. We still keep in touch with one another. Being a LWPI student at Lehman College allowed me to meet great people in the industry such as Sasha Souza, Lisa Ghiotti maker of the Bridal Bouquet Holders. We even went to Sylvia Weinstocks bakery which was such a great experience. Jacqueline Vazquez a wedding planner and ABC member reminded us to never feel too old, to make our dreams come true, there is enough business out there for all. This has been such a great experience and I know the possibilities are endless. Good Luck everyone! Narda

Great Experience

Posted By Kayla M. Midkiff, Thursday, June 23, 2011
I have always wanted to be a Wedding Planner but I was not sure what steps to take to get there. This course taught me everything I need to know to jump into the wedding industry to become an incredible planner. I would have been lost without this course. Not only do I know how to coordinate a beautiful wedding now, I can also help with many other cultures and lifestyles which will set me apart from most Wedding Planners in my area.

Taking this course was the best decision to make for my professional future. I would highly recommend it to any aspiring Wedding Planners out there!

Perfection!

Posted By Stefani Harris, Sunday, June 19, 2011
This course was PERFECT!!  I've been thinking about starting my own wedding planning business for several years and while doing the homework for this course, I realized that there are so many things I hadn't even thought about...from marketing ideas to ideas on how to organize and run my business.  I will most definitely use this information for my future business.

I really enjoyed the course and would recommended it to anyone thinking about joining this industry.  My instructor, Kelly Teague, was very helpful and provided me with great feedback on how to improve some of my ideas.  Thank you Kelly! And thank you LWPI for putting together this awesome course!

Interning With Preston Bailey: Week One

Posted By Abby Langston, Monday, June 13, 2011
Tara Martin-Crawford, a graduate of Preston Bailey's Signature Wedding and Event Design course, started last week her internship with Preston at his Manhattan offices. Each Monday she'll be sharing with the LWPI community her experiences and what she's learning as she continues her education under Preston. Her first journal entry is available today. She was thrown right into the thick of things; that's the best way to learn, don't you think? Check it out on the LWPI blog.

I wanted to gain more knowledge about the Wedding & Event field and this course was perfect!!  I have learned many things throughout this course, which I know I could not gain through personal experience as a Destination Wedding Planner.

Now that I am getting closer to the end, I truly feel like I made a great decision in taking this course.  Thank you!

Amazing Experience

Posted By Cristina Bosque, Friday, June 3, 2011

I have had an amazing experience in the Wedding and Event Planning class at Lehman College. My instructor Laurie Beckmann explained not only things in the book but let us know about upcoming trends and situations that she sees happening at her location (appel inn) She has many years of experience and has dealt with many different types of brides. She explained to us what to be careful of with everything from a bad contract, to an unhappy bride. We have had guest speakers like a local Florist, Event Planner, Rabbi, and even attended The Stationary Show at Jacob Javitz Center. The class was very hands on and has taught me alot in how I will plan out my buisness. I also learned alot through doing the homework on my own Puerto Rican wedding traditions as well as other cultures. I can now say I am very confident to plan an event and cant wait for my first one in a couple weeks!  -Cristina Bosque

Perfect Timing

Posted By Linda Macahilas (Smith), Thursday, June 2, 2011

I have enjoyed the WPI assignments so much and they have helped me with several upcoming events. Within the next two months I have an East Indian wedding I am volunteering my "day of" services to, my mother's 80th birthday party and my step-daughter's rehearsal dinner, wedding and reception. The reception is in a canopy on our property! I am more than confident that with the excellent education I have received that I will be an asset to all of these events. I have been able to take what I have learned and have used it to improve my skills.

I will be starting my "official" business soon and having this certification will let my community, and other wedding planners, know that I am dedicated to my chosen career and love what I do.

A huge Thank You to all of those responsible for such a great program!

Knowledge is Power

Posted By Gabriela Schreiber, Sunday, May 29, 2011
The CWEP course has been quite the experience for me. As I near the end of the course and look back at how much I’ve learned, I’m feeling confident and well prepared for my career as a wedding and event planner and business owner.

As a wedding and event planning professional, one of the most important things I learned is managing the six areas of the event experience (A6 event production). They say the little details make a BIG difference! As a business owner, one of the most important things I’ve learned is about the many possible ways to market and expand my business. Building and managing a successful presence in the industry is key!

Overall, this course has inspired me to be a more creative and "outside the box” thinker. Thanks to LWPI for making such a comprehensive course available to those of us with dreams of becoming professional wedding and events planners AND business owners. Best of luck to everyone taking the course!

all the way from South America

Posted By Melissa Sampedro (Melissa) Sr, Thursday, May 26, 2011

My experience in this course was amazing, I live in Ecuador but I love to travel and I wanted to come come to California and take a look on how you work on hands with vendors and venues etc...

However, this time in California has been extremely helpful and got to know amazing people in the classroom, and knowing whole different cultures helps to open your mind just MUCH MORE than you thought you were.

Best regards to everyone in my classroom and to our Dearest teacher Janet.

Course recap

Posted By Charity Ramos (Smith), Monday, May 23, 2011

As a wedding and event planning company co-owner I have found the lessons learned over the past few months very useful and applicable for both those who are in the industry today and for those who plan to start in the future. Being organized or a good designer is not enough if you want to be successful; keeping up with trends, market conditions, customs, etc are all essential and this course does a good job of making you find places to get this information now and in the future. Good luck and much success to all who complete the course!

"AN UNFORGETTABLE EXPERIENCE"

Posted By Vatrice Clorie, Tuesday, May 17, 2011

When I decided to take this course to become a certified wedding planner, I was not prepared for the coursework that it entailed. When I received the book and saw how thick it was I got a little nervous; however, when I started reading the the chapters and doing the actual assignments I became speechless. The only thing I could think was if your business is not successful, its not because of WPI, its because of self. All the tools needed to get your business up and running is provided in this course.

I am so excited at the aspect of joining different bridal associations, networking within the industry, and of course helping create visions for my clients. While I have done event planning in the pass, this course showed me how to step my game up.

My vision is to be one day be that planner who can work on her business and not work in her business. Those are words to live by; I have made that my motto and I thank you WPI for providing me with the knowledge needed to take my business to the next level. Hopefully, one day I will be able to be an Instructor for WPI and pass down the wealth of knowledge to the newbies who will follow in all of our footsteps.

Vatrice Clorie, Co-Owner                                                                                             Unforgettable Moments Wedding & Event Planning, Inc.

Close To The End, and a Wedding To Boot!

Posted By Wendy Spencer, Thursday, May 12, 2011

I have absolutely LOVED the WPI  Course!  The content has been thorough, with homework that not only keeps you busy and challenges you, BUT it brings you through the entire process of what needs to be done in order to actually open your Wedding Planning business....what an extra BONUS!!

The instructor (Kelly) has been fantastic at answering my questions when I had them, giving additional examples on how the homework could be applied. As a student, that is very helpful!

The only downfall to this course is that I am enjoying it so much I will be sad to see it over!  After having event planning experience for years prior to having my children, I was a bit unsure if I would enjoy the wedding aspect but I have found, it even more rewarding (and, yes, even the hard work) than I imagined!  Through the time of this course I was even approached by a bride to do her wedding for her in just 2 short months and I'm halfway there and absolutely loving it....and she is so thankful I am there to help!

If any of you are farther along in the process and have found any wonderful resources that you'd be willing to share with this new wedding planner, I would greatly appreciate it!  If you have a blog you've found that you follow then please share these as well!

Looking forward to finishing the course to final certification!
Wendy Spencer, future owner of Perfect Day Wedding Planners

Ready for the Future

Posted By Marvis Holt, Wednesday, May 4, 2011
When I decided to take this course, I had already been doing balloon decorating for weddings and parties for 13 years, I had stopped the last 4 years.  Now because of LWPI and the excellent teaching of Heather Porcella, I will be able to offer complete wedding and event planning when I get my business back up and running.

I'm just a few steps away from completion and feeling a great sense of achievement.  I'm definitely looking forward to my future.

                                                                                          THANK YOU

Now I'm a Believer

Posted By Valorie Courtney, Monday, May 2, 2011

I started this course as a skeptic of the wedding planner's role. I wanted to learn the details of event planning in order to plan corporate and social events, but not weddings. The further I went into the course, the more I realized that planners are not a needless luxury; they are a priceless asset to any couple planning their wedding. Instead of viewing planners as a threat to individuality, I see them as a catalyst to creating a signature event that will be remembered forever. They are not just another vendor; they are a support system and a friend to help guide couples along a very stressful and confusing path. Most wedding planners do not start out because they want to make a large sum of money; they work hard and long hours because they love what they do. They love making couple's dreams come true.

The course was hard work, but I believe that I am fully equipped to not only start my own business, but keep it afloat and growing. The network of people and the experiences the course has brought with it has made me a stronger and more confident person.
